About Alcântara
Alcântara sits between Belém and the more central neighbourhoods, running along the north bank of the Tejo with the dramatic backdrop of the 25 de Abril suspension bridge. It was historically an industrial and working-class neighbourhood — textile factories, warehouses and the old docks lined the waterfront — and the traces of that history are part of what gives the neighbourhood its character today. The transformation began with LX Factory, a cluster of creative businesses, restaurants, vintage shops and cultural events housed in a former industrial complex. The Doca de Santo Amaro, a marina lined with restaurants and bars, followed. New residential development has arrived alongside conversion of former warehouses into loft-style apartments. The result is a neighbourhood with real energy and genuine diversity — old Alcântara residents alongside young professionals and international buyers who are priced out of Chiado but want the same riverside lifestyle.
