About Estrela

Estrela occupies the high ground between Chiado and Campo de Ourique, and it has the feel of a neighbourhood that has always known its own worth. The building stock is predominantly late 19th and early 20th century — solid, well-proportioned apartment buildings with high ceilings, generous floor plans and the kind of construction quality that ages well. The centrepiece is the Jardim da Estrela, a romantic Victorian garden with a Victorian bandstand, a pond with terrapins and ducks, and mature trees that provide real shade in summer. The Basílica da Estrela — one of Lisbon's most striking churches — anchors the square at the garden's entrance. Property here is consistently in demand from French buyers (the Lycée Français is a short walk away), British families, and international buyers seeking a residential address rather than a tourist-facing neighbourhood.

What it is like to live here

The Jardim da Estrela

The garden is the soul of the neighbourhood. Opened in 1852, it is one of the finest public gardens in Lisbon — formal but not stiff, always full of families, dog walkers and people reading on the benches. The Victorian bandstand hosts occasional concerts. On weekend mornings it is where Estrela residents go, coffee in hand, before the day properly begins. If you are buying in Estrela, you are buying this garden as much as you are buying the apartment.

Schools and family infrastructure

Estrela is one of the best-served neighbourhoods in Lisbon for families with school-age children. The Lycée Français Charles Lepierre is a short walk from the centre of the neighbourhood and is the choice of the large French community in Lisbon. St Julian's School and CAISL are accessible from here. The neighbourhood also has good local schools, a strong children's library and a safe, walkable environment that makes the school run straightforward.

Quiet streets and daily life

Estrela is not a nightlife neighbourhood, and that is precisely its appeal for the people who choose to live here. The streets are quiet, the restaurants are good rather than fashionable, and the pace of life is that of a genuinely residential European neighbourhood. There are excellent bakeries, a good supermarket, independent shops and the kind of tabernas that serve lunch to the same people every day. It is a neighbourhood where you quickly feel at home.

Architecture and period apartments

The apartment buildings of Estrela are among the best of Lisbon's late 19th-century stock — solid masonry construction, high ceilings (typically 3.2–3.8 metres), generous room proportions and well-maintained common areas. Many buildings have been renovated in recent years, bringing new kitchens and bathrooms while preserving original flooring, plasterwork and shutters. The neighbourhood has been gentrified with a light touch, and that quality of character is preserved.

Estrela tends to suit…

  • Families with school-age children, particularly those connected to the Lycée Français
  • International buyers seeking a quiet, high-quality residential neighbourhood
  • French buyers — the largest international community in Estrela
  • Long-term residents who value stability and neighbourhood character over novelty
  • Buyers upgrading from smaller apartments who want more space and better quality
