Overview
About São Vicente.
The parish of São Vicente covers some of the oldest continuously inhabited ground in Lisbon — the streets around the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, the Panteão Nacional, and the Feira da Ladra (the twice-weekly flea market held at Campo de Santa Clara). It sits on the ridge between Alfama below and Graça above, taking in pieces of both. Building stock reflects that history: older pre-earthquake houses and churches, post-1755 Pombaline apartments, 19th-century terraced rows, a handful of modern insertions. Ground-floor life has held its character remarkably well — the bakery, the talho, the vinho verde lunch counter, the local barbearia are all still trading, while Sunday mornings at the Feira da Ladra have been a Lisbon institution since the Middle Ages. Transport relies on the tram 28, buses and walking; Santa Apolónia metro is a 10-minute walk downhill.
