How to Get a NIF Number in Portugal

Your NIF is the first thing you need before you can buy property, open a bank account or sign any contract in Portugal. Here is how to get one.

A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal’s tax identification number — the equivalent of a National Insurance number in the UK or a Social Security number in the US. You will need one before you can do almost anything official in Portugal: buy property, open a bank account, sign a rental contract, connect utilities or register a company.

Getting a NIF is one of the first practical steps in your Portugal journey, and it is simpler than it sounds.

What you need a NIF for

  • Signing the CPCV (promissory contract) when buying property
  • Paying IMT and stamp duty at the notary
  • Opening a Portuguese bank account
  • Applying for a mortgage
  • Connecting utilities (electricity, water, gas)
  • Filing Portuguese tax returns if you become a resident
  • Setting up direct debits

Option 1: Get your NIF while in Portugal

If you are already in Portugal — or planning to visit — you can get your NIF in person at any Finanças office (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira). This is the fastest and most straightforward method.

What to bring:

  • Your passport (original)
  • Proof of address from your home country (a bank statement, utility bill or official letter — dated within 3 months)
  • If you are an EU citizen: your national identity card is sufficient

Process:

  1. Go to any Finanças office (there is one in the centre of Lisbon at Rua Áurea 290)
  2. Take a number and wait (typically 15–45 minutes)
  3. Present your documents and request a NIF
  4. Your NIF is issued on the spot — you receive a document with your number

Cost: Free.

Time: Same day.

Option 2: Get your NIF from abroad (fiscal representative)

If you are not yet in Portugal, you can obtain a NIF from your home country using a fiscal representative — a Portuguese lawyer, accountant or licensed agent who acts as your tax representative in Portugal.

This is the most common approach for international buyers in the early stages of their search, before they have made their first trip.

Process:

  1. Engage a fiscal representative (your buyer’s agent or lawyer can arrange this)
  2. Provide a copy of your passport and proof of address
  3. The fiscal representative applies to the Finanças on your behalf
  4. Your NIF is issued and communicated to you

Cost: Fiscal representative fees vary but typically run €150–€350 for NIF registration alone.

Time: 1–2 weeks.

Important: If you obtain a NIF through a fiscal representative, that representative will be linked to your NIF and responsible for receiving any tax correspondence from the Portuguese authorities. When you eventually become a Portuguese tax resident, you can update your details and remove the fiscal representative requirement.

Option 3: At the Portuguese consulate

If you are an EU/EEA citizen, some Portuguese consulates in your home country can issue a NIF directly. Availability and processing times vary by country — contact your nearest Portuguese consulate to check.

After you have your NIF

Once you have your NIF, the next steps are typically:

  1. Open a Portuguese bank account — most banks require your NIF (see our bank account guide)
  2. Engage a lawyer — to review properties and handle contracts
  3. Start viewing properties — your NIF is required to make an offer

Common questions

Can I use a NIF from another EU country? No. Portugal requires its own NIF for all transactions within the country.

Does my NIF expire? No. Your NIF is permanent. Even if you leave Portugal, your NIF remains valid.

Is there a difference between a NIF and a NIPC? Yes. A NIF is for individuals; a NIPC is for companies. If you are buying through a company structure, your lawyer will advise on the NIPC.

What if I already have a NIF from a previous visit? Your NIF never changes. If you obtained one previously, check your old documents — it is a 9-digit number starting with 1, 2 or 3.
